What is this course about?

Welcome.

Having found your way here you probably already have some idea what metaphors are.

This course is not about exactly defining what they are and how they differ from analogies, similes or other figures of speech. More in the general region of metaphors.

I apologize in advance to all you language geeks out there in case I accidently use a different... or incorrect word for what I'm talking about.

One way I describe metaphors to people often is that they are a handle for your thoughts. They allow you to attach something to an abstract concept and then blurt it out. Unfortunately when you throw the handle to someone else, it doesn't open the same window.

This is an important lesson about language in general. You never know how people will understand the words you use.
